THE CREATION - Norse Mythology 1
Let's do Norse mythology; the creation. In the beginning there was
no grass, lake, heaven or earth. There was only a land in the north, cast in shadow and freezing mist,
called Niflheim. Far to the south was Muspell
a world of fire and burning heat where no foreign
creature could live.
Between these worlds was the great void;
Ginnungagap. Within Niflheim there was a well call Hvergelmir
from which frozen poisonous rivers flowed. And when these flowed far enough
they turned to ice. From this, layer by layer, an enormous
frost giant took form, and he would have stayed frozen had it
not been for the warmth of Muspell.
The giant Ymir was awake. Ymir's wet nurse also came
from the melting ice in Ginnungagap. Her name was Audhumla and she was a cow. Ymir took nourishment from her dips and she fed by licking the salt
stones from the ice.
After three days of licking, each day
revealing more and more the shape of a person, Buri was born and from him, the Gods originated. Buri had a son called Bor
with a female giant, and Bor had three sons; Ve, Vili and Odin. For reasons unknown these three
sons killed the giant Ymir which forever caused strained bonds
between the remaining Giants and the Gods. The body of Ymir was placed in
the center of Ginnungagap and his body parts helped shape the worlds.
His flesh became the earth, his blood became the sea and the lakes.
His bones and teeth became
the mountains and the hills. His hair became the plants, his skull became
the sky and his brain became the clouds. Then from to tree trunks, the sons of Bor
created Ask and Embla, the first humans. Odin gave them breath and life,
Vile gave them reason and mobility and Ve gave them looks and senses.
The gods realized that humans
needed protection from the Giants so from Ymir's body they took his eyebrows
and encircled the humans into Midgard, between the lands of the Giants and the Gods. The earth was thereby split into three worlds
for the Giants, the humans and the Gods. More of these and the other six worlds
in the next episode. That was the first episode of the Norse mythology series which will be
created into a playlist and will come out every other week together with 10
Swedish words on Thursdays here on TheSwedishLad.
